Joiners Definition Post and Research

Joiners are a photography technique used through overlapping that consists of multiple images that have been placed together considerably to construct one final outcome image.


David Hockney Research
David Hockney is an artist and photographer who started this idea of joiners. He was originally a painter but then when he started being interested in photography, he thought taking straight up photos was to limiting and restricting, so therefore he started taking multiple images of objects and scenery from different angles and put them all together in a collaged form to create an overall image.

This one shows how using joiners can create a distorted effect on simple objects like this chair and it infact changes our whole perspective on the chair making it look completely different.
This one is more of a college of  a road that fits together more regularly so it does't distort the viewers vision so much.





Joiners can come in different forms. The two examples by David Hockney show how some can be more randomly placed to change the shape and view of the object being photographed. Whereas some can be perfectly placed together so the whole image still fits in the same way. This can be easier on the viewers vision.
This example shows how overlapping can be used to create this effect. The individual images fit really nicely together and all the measurements are the same however the images all overlap each other like a collage effect.

Depth Work Diary

To apply my knowledge of depth to taking some example photos, I used the same model who held out different objects and I shifted the focus and changed the apeture and F stop to make it suitable for the picture to get the right exposure. I did this for shallow and wide depth of field.

Shallow depth of field:

I liked this image as it is a very clear example of shallow depth of field. This is as the focus is only on the shoe and the model in the background is blurred, this emphasises the definition of the shoe. To take this I had an F stop of 5.6 to create the blurred background. I had the shutter speed in 1/125 and to help get the perfect exposure on the image I put my camera on manual mode.




The two images above both have the same shutter speed and F stop as the first picture however I shifted the focus to be on the model rather than the camera. I think the first one didn't work so well as the models face is not entirely in the shot as it's covered a lot by the camera she is holding. I think this makes the difference in focus a lot less obvious this could make it more difficult to differentiate the layers in the picture.
I really liked the second picture as  the whole of her face can be seen this makes it easy to make her the focus of the picture. The camera is slightly blurred as it isn't in focus. I liked how sharp her eyes are as she is looking directly into the camera and I think this draws even more attention to her as the focus point of the picture.

Progression

I was not to keen on this picture as it shows no focus as all of the picture is blurred. I think this makes the picture lack any sort of depth and it means there is no focus point. Therefore the whole image is quite bland and seems as if theres not much to it. To improve the quality of this shoot I would have made sure I had a focus point to all my images to show the shallow depth of field.










Wide Depth of field:

To show this wide depth of field I changed my camera to have a F stop of 21. This allowed the whole frame of the image to be in focus. To show this technique I shot photos of a model holding a hat to show how they are both in focus. 
I wasn't to keen on this one as I think I took the photo from to far away so it's difficult to see the effect of the wide depth of field.
I think this image worked better to show this technique as we can clearly see both the hat and face is in focus.






More Examples: 

After practising these techniques and camera settings in the studio I went outside to see the effect that background has on depth of field.

This image shows quite a wide depth of field as the background and the model is in focus.
I really liked this image as it shows a shallower depth of field as the backgound is slightly blurred but the model is in focus. I think this depth of field works best with pictures like this where there is a portrait of someone against quite a plain background. I think this is because it then draws more attention to the person and makes them stand out more.
This image shows the use of a vingette, I made this quite a strong vignette to make her face seem really illuminative.

I also used a vignette on this picture. Considering its a shallow depth of field picture, I liked how the background was therefore slightly blurred so I think the vignette made her stand out from the background even more which creates a defined background and foreground.

Depth Image Bank

This is an example of a shallow depth of field image. I liked how we can still make out it is a portrait of a girl but the focus is on the hand and everything else is blurred out. I think this adds strength to the image as her hand.
This image also has a shallow depth. I like how the background contains bold and quite saturated colours but it is very blurred which makes the colours blend and blur together.
This image has a deep depth. I like how all the bikes are placed in an order which creates a pattern that travels up through the image. This adds direction and depth to the image. 
This image is also a wide depth. There is a vanishing point in the centre of the image because the bridge and the sea take our view to that one point. I like how theres different layers e.g. theres the bride, the sea and the sky. This was probably taken with quite a high F-stop value. Also we can tell it is quite a wide angle lens this is because the whole landscape is in the picture, and its all in focus.
This picture is In a shallow depth of field so was probably taken with a low F stop number as only one of the faces is in focus and the rest is all blurred. This draws our attention to that person suggesting he's the main subject and the most important person.





Depth Definition Post

Depth of Field: The measurement of how much the picture is in focus. A lens can only focus on one plane at  a time. 
Switch the wheel to ‘A’ which is Aperture Priority Mode. This mode lets you choose the Aperture (the size of the hole in your lens) and tells the camera to choose all the other settings. This semi-auto mode is a great way to control depth of field as it will ensure your images are well exposed. For shallow depth of field and nice blurry backgrounds choose a large Aperture (the smaller the number the larger the aperture).  The best way for familiarising yourself with Aperture is taking shots in different apertures and seeing how this effects the focus and softness of the picture therefore the depth of field.


A shallow depth of field specifically looks at one element of the picture and one subject. This subject is commonly a portrait picture. This helps blur out any distractions in the background putting more focus on the subject. This is why the depth of the picture is shallow. 


A wide depth of field allows more of the image in to be in focus. This is suitable for landscapes as there is not just one focus point so the whole image is focused and clear. This is done with a much larger F stop e.g. F 22. 




Wide angle: the camera having a short focal length and hence a field covering a wide angle.

Camera Adjustments and Definition

ISO - international standards organisation
This involves light sensitivity. The higher the ISO, the lower the light sensitivity but the higher the quality of the picture.

Aperture - controls the levels of light that get into the camera. This helps the camera adjust to the brightness of the environment that the image is being taken in.

SLR - single lens reflex
The mirror in the camera helps the light path travel from the lens to the viewfinder.

The larger the 'F stop' number the smaller the aperture. This helps explain how the camera affects the exposure of pictures

Shutter Speed - controls the time frame that a motion picture is taken in. This is because it controls how long the shutter inside the camera stays open for.

This is all important to get the correct exposure on the pictures.

DOF - depth of field
this controls the focus of the image and how much of the picture is in focus.

Movement Image Bank

I liked this image because I liked how the bright red light path contrasts on the dark background. This creates a very distinct pattern. I also like the actual pattern the light creates because while it's quite simple, its not to basic and there's still some complexity about it and because the whole path is made up of smooth curves, it's quite easy to follow. 
I liked this image as the movement is not caused by the content of the image but the way in which the picture was taken as the photographer was clearly in fast motion while going through this tunnel then capturing a frame which distorts the view and focus of the picture creating this effect. I also like how this way of capturing creates alternating light tones along the tunnel and this creates a sense of direction and depth in the image, almost like we are in the tunnel and following this path just by looking at the photo.
I like in this image how we can see that the girl is turning and her skirt is moving as she turns around and is moving in that circular motion around her. I like how the floor also seems to be travelling in this circular direction along with the skirt. I also like how the depth of the photo allows the focus to be on the girls face which has a nice effect as she is the center of the outward movement in a circular motion.



I really liked this image as its all in focus besides the hand which is strumming the guitar. I like how this captures the real life essence of playing the guitar as that would be the hand that moves while playing. I also like the preciseness of the shot as the rest of the image is in a really steady frame and it's just the hand that shows the movement in the picture.
I liked how this picture has captured a very precise moment in time where the bird is flying up causing the water to splash up. I think how the water is splashed up around the bird really shows a movement as due to gravity, water couldn't stand and stay like that therefore this picture shows the water in way we wouldn't normally see it very a long enough period of time.
