Shape Bill Brandt Research

Bill Brandt is a photographer who's main focus is on identifying and showing different shapes in his images. He looks at the human figure and objects but he mostly focuses on the female figure. He also uses and manipulates the negative space in the image to emphasise and enhance the effect the shape has on the image.

This is an example of one of his images where he looks at the female form. The negative space creates a high contrast between the figure/shape. This makes the lines of the shape very distinct as we can clearly see the outline. Without this negative space the shape would be less obvious and not have as much of an effect. This is also very abstract as even though we recognise what the figure is, we would never see a female in this way because of the lighting.

This is another example of his work that involves the female figure. There is not as much use of negative space as there are things going on in the background that we can identify eg. the window. The shape/object is bare female legs. This image can either be seen as sexual objectification, because of the way she is sitting and how she is appears to be be nude. This can give off a sexual effect. However I think this is also art because of the way he has manipulated the way we see this irregular shape by capturing from this angle.
